What are symptoms of ocular trauma?

Ocular trauma can include any type of damage to your eye after a direct blow. Most ocular traumas are accidents, and can result in:

  • Pain
  • Vision changes
  • Pupil changes
  • Bulging eye
  • Slow eye movement
  • Bloody eye
  • Object in eye

Ocular trauma requires immediate care because blows to the eye can lead to cataracts, glaucoma, or other very serious eye conditions.

What are the symptoms of a non-trauma eye emergency?

Ocular trauma is a common eye emergency, but it’s far from being the only one. There are many different problems that could require emergency eye care, including painful red eye, corneal abrasions, conjunctivitis (pink eye), and eye infections. Some symptoms that often point to eye infection or other serious eye problems can include:

  • Red eyes
  • Eye pain
  • Light sensitivity
  • Blurry vision
  • Eye discharge
  • Inflamed eyelids

These symptoms can be quite severe, so it’s important to treat it promptly. This type of eye damage could permanently hurt your eye health and vision if untreated.

How are eye emergencies diagnosed?

Your Cohen Laser & Vision Center ophthalmologist will evaluate your ocular trauma with a detailed eye exam, which typically includes a visual acuity test and a slit lamp (magnified) eye exam.

Dr. Cohen typically does an intraocular pressure check, an eye movement test, pupillary reaction tests, and other tests to evaluate the health and function of your eyes. You might also need other advanced imaging or diagnostic tests, based on the situation.

Cohen Laser & Vision Center is equipped with all the advanced equipment your ophthalmologist needs to diagnose and treat your eye emergency on the spot.
